The Daredevil Princess and The Golden Unicorn

“kid-lit superstar Belinda Murrell’s latest series… charming..loveable…”

Books and Publishing

“…from one of our favourite authors, Belinda Murrell. The first in a brand new series especially pitched at freshly independent readers, this has all the makings of a runaway success story. It has it all: less than perfect royals, plenty of pink, unicorns, flowers, dachshunds, lots of humour, excitement, and just the right amount of mischief…Utterly charming. Highly recommended.”

Princess Tillie is brave and bold, clever and curious, daring and very determined.

Which is just as well because there is trouble in the Queendom of Blumenfeld. A sneaky thief has been stealing the royal roses. The Summer Harvest Festival will be a disaster!
Princess Tillie sets out to trap the thief and solve the mystery, with the help of King Edwin’s latest invention. But a sassy, golden unicorn called Honey Blossom turns everything upside down.

Can Princess Tillie and Honey Blossom save the day?

The DAREDEVIL PRINCESS Inspiration

I love writing fun books which kids will love to read, that will help them to forge a lifelong enchantment with reading.

The Daredevil Princess is set in a fun, fairytale world, with a modern twist, filled with magic, daring adventures, and a very sassy unicorn called Honey Blossom. Crown Princess Tillie is brave and bold, clever and curious, daring and very determined. While Queen Cordelia is working hard to solve the problems of the queendom of Blumenfeld, and King Edwin is in his laboratory creating disastrous magical inventions, Princess Tillie is off having thrilling adventures with the royal dachshunds, a mysterious rose thief, a band of naughty goblins, a grumpy giant and a feisty fire dragon.

The world of Blumenfeld and Rosenberg Palace was inspired by my lifelong love of fairy tales and magical creatures, but particularly about a special real-life fairy tale place called Gersbach. When I was 22, I worked for three months as a stable girl on a beautiful Bavarian farm, surrounded by an enchanted forest. The nearby walled town of Coburg was filled with gingerbread houses, cobbled laneways, a medieval castle and the gorgeous royal palaces of Ehrenburg and Rosenau. I felt like I was living in a fairy tale.

Interestingly, Schloss Ehrenburg and the summer palace at Rosenau was where Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert grew up and various European royals are regularly spotted wandering Coburg’s picturesque laneways. Queen Victoria said Coburg was one of her favourite places.

As the mother of a daughter and two sons, (now grown up) I am passionate about creating realistic and inspiring girl protagonists, as aspiring role models for young readers. After all, you cannot be what you cannot see! When my daughter was growing up as a voracious reader, I realised that most of the books she read had a boy as the hero. I was determined to write books which she would love, that had adventurous, curious, and fun girl protagonists, as well as great boy characters.

My focus was on writing fun and adventurous stories, with loveable characters and gentle humour to appeal to younger readers. The Daredevil Princess has many of the traditional fairytale elements which kids love (including magical objects, a talking unicorn, dragons, giants, goblins, and royalty) but with a contemporary twist. Although she is a princess, who lives in a gorgeous palace, Crown Princess Tillie is a thoroughly modern and ordinary girl. She loses her temper, breaks the rules, runs late, bosses her younger brother, gets dirty and sometimes finds her lessons frustrating but she always tries to be clever and curious, brave and bold, daring and very determined. Her mother has a busy job running the Queendom. Her father is a zany scientist who creates disastrous magical inventions. And her best friends include a sassy unicorn, a farm boy called Lukas and two adorable dachshunds.

My daughter Emily is the inspiration for Princess Tillie – because she is brave and bold, clever and curious, daring and very determined, and she always loved dressing up as a princess or adventurer, always with her trusty riding boots. Emily and I were lucky enough to go back to Bavaria while I was writing the Daredevil Princess and visit all the settings which inspired the books including Ehrenberg and Rosenau Palaces, the walled town of Coburg, Tambach forest, and the farm at Gersbach.

I am so grateful to illustrator Rebecca Crane, who has done such a superb job of bringing my characters and world to life.
